Oakville Sports Medicine Centre now has a Biodex, which is the state of the art computerized multi-joint orthopaedic testing and rehabilitation system. This system has attachments which allows us to test and train every extremity joint of the body. The apparatus works on the premise of isokinetic exercise. This is defined as a variable resistance that is accommodating to allow maximal muscle loading throughout the full range of motion. Resistance accommodates to changes that occur in the muskoloskeletal leverage system, fatigue and pain. The speed is expressed in degrees of movement per second around an axis of rotation. The Biodex measures a pure test of strength for a particular joint without postural or musculature compensation.

ADVANTAGES

• Can be used for both testing and rehabilitation.
• Modes of operation for exercise and testing include Isokinetic, Passive, Isometric and Reactive Eccentric.
• Able to rest and exercise over the broadest range of speeds available today.
• Biofeedback is provided by the high resolution colour graphics monitor encouraging patient compliance with exercise protocols.
• Facilitates effective treatment of a broad range of patients and pathologies.
• Protocols can be made sport specific to all types of athletes.
• A Biodex assessment of physical impairment both before and during a rehabilitation program for a fast and effective return to normal activity.
• Profiles can often predict susceptibility to injury in an otherwise healthy individual.
• Their interpretation helps to monitor the progress of injury and eventually determine the correct timing of a patients return to their activities.
• Isokinetic evaluations provide a graph curve depicting the patients ability to generate torque, work, or power and its interpretation is useful in a number of ways.
• Suitable for a wide variety of Patients.
• Works with the joints and soft tissue in an effort to strengthen and help restore a range of motion.
• Utilizes the benefits of Isokinetic resistance exercise in combination with a strictly regiments, computer-assisted program, specially tailored to fit the needs of each individual patient.
